One of the most important contributors to chronic symptoms, chronic disease, and premature death is toxicity. Conventional medicine largely ignores this major determinant of health. By contrast, toxicity assessment and detoxification treatments are pillars of the approach used in Functional Medicine. Fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, depression, headaches, joint pain, digestive symptoms, autoimmune disease, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, infertility, and autism are just a few of the conditions that can result from toxicity. Whatever the chronic symptom or disease, toxicity is likely to be a factor. No one in our industrialized world escapes exposure to toxins. In fact, 232 toxic chemicals have been found in umbilical cord blood of newborns.
Nutritious Bytes
For years I have read research about various biochemicals, such as indoxyl sulfate and pentosidine, which contribute to chronic disease and biological aging. I wondered why no lab offered these important tests. Now one does! I’m thrilled to be partnering with Iollo, a Stanford start-up. Iollo launched late last year and offers these biomarkers and hundreds more.
Mitopure is a new supplement from a company called Timeline. It represents one of the most important discoveries and developments in health and aging. Mitopure contains the molecule Urolithin A, which improves mitochondrial function like no other.
Better than "Keto"! Better than Fasting!
In a few short years of being on the market, ProLon® has become king of the nutrition world. Before it came into being, however, millions of dollars of research grants and years of research by Dr. Volter Longo and the Longevity Institute laid the groundwork. The 28 published papers on the Fasting-Mimicking Diet (ProLon®) are tremendous and are attracting interest from institutions around the world. ProLon® has the distinction of being the only diet ever to be the subject of a New England Journal of Medicine article. It has been discussed in 3 articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In previous blog posts (“Want your penis to work? Try flossing your teeth...but skip the mouthwash!” and “Want your penis to work - again? (part 2): A Holistic Approach to Erectile Dysfunction...And Vascular Health”) I discussed the importance of nitric oxide for erectile function and overall vascular health. Nitric oxide (NO) is a critical biochemical that can be impaired by genetics, many lifestyle and other factors, and also declines with age.
"Say N.O. to E.D....Say N.O. to all Disease!"
Last month I discussed a holistic approach to erectile dysfunction and poor vascular health. The focus was on the critical biochemical nitric oxide (N.O.). Nitric oxide plays a key role in blood vessel relaxation and dilation and, therefore, erectile function. Nitric oxide is essential for healthy blood vessels and avoidance of heart attack and stroke. By improving blood flow, nitric oxide plays a pivotal role in nutrient delivery, waste removal, and energy production. This translates into improved function and better health throughout the body. Actually, nitric oxide does many other beneficial things in the body, which deserve attention in future discussions.
